The road north passes through Emilia-Romagna, the culinary heartland of Italy. It skirts Bologna — the oldest university city in the world, its medieval towers and endless porticoes visible from the motorway. It passes through the Motor Valley, where Ferrari, Lamborghini and Pagani were born within a few kilometres of each other. And then the Apennines, the Po Valley, the first glimpse of the Alps — and finally, the water.

Lake Como itself is not one place but many. Cernobbio — grand villas, Villa d'Este, the western shore closest to Milan.
