From Fantiscritti quarries to Colonnata lardo, ending at the sea in Forte dei Marmi
The Experience
There is a place in Tuscany where the mountains are white. Not covered in snow — carved open by centuries of quarrying, their flanks exposed in great sweeping walls of pure Carrara marble. This is where you are going.
Your private Mercedes driver picks you up directly from your hotel, villa, B&B or agriturismo — anywhere in Florence, Lucca, Forte dei Marmi, Pisa, Viareggio, Montecatini or the surrounding area. No shared buses, no fixed meeting points. We come to your door.
The first stop is the Cave di Fantiscritti — and this is not just any quarry. These are the caves where Michelangelo Buonarroti came in person to choose his marble. He did not send someone else. He came himself, walked these same white walls, touched the stone, and decided which block was worthy of becoming the David, the Pietà, the Moses. Standing here, you understand something that no museum can teach you: that every great sculpture began as a choice made in this mountain.
Then the road takes you somewhere extraordinary. The drive from Fantiscritti to Colonnata is one of the most dramatic in all of Italy — tunnels blasted through solid marble, hairpin bends cut into the mountainside, sudden openings where the landscape unfolds in front of you like a painting. The green of the chestnut forests. The blinding white of the quarry faces. The deep blue of the Ligurian sky above the coast. It is the kind of scenery that makes you put your phone down and simply look.
Colonnata is a village that clings to the mountain as if it has no intention of ever leaving. This is where the quarry workers lived, and where they invented one of the great foods of Italy: Lardo di Colonnata IGP. Cured in basins carved from the local marble, layered with rosemary, garlic, black pepper and local herbs — served on unsalted Tuscan bread with a glass of local wine, it is the merenda del cavatore: the quarryman's snack, and one of the most honest, flavourful things you will eat in Italy.
The afternoon opens up. A walk along the famous wooden pier of Forte dei Marmi, stretching out over the clear Tyrrhenian Sea. Or, if you prefer, a stop in Pisa to see the Piazza dei Miracoli at your own pace. Or Lucca, with its Renaissance walls and perfectly preserved medieval centre. The choice is yours — this is a private tour, and the day belongs to you.
