A private wine tasting day in the Chianti hills — from Livorno port to the vineyards of Tuscany and back before your ship departs.
Your driver at the port exit. The hills of Chianti an hour away. The rest is wine.
Most cruise passengers who dock at Livorno head to Florence or Pisa. Both are excellent choices. But if you have already seen the cities — or if what you have always wanted is a day in the Tuscan countryside with a glass of Chianti in hand — this excursion is built around that idea.
Your driver meets you at the port exit at Livorno at an agreed time — typically 8:30 to 9:00, depending on your ship's schedule. From Livorno, the drive into the Chianti Classico zone takes approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. The road climbs steadily through the Valdarno, and by the time you reach the first estate, the landscape has already become the Tuscany of the postcards — vine rows, cypress alleys, stone farmhouses, hilltop villages with medieval towers.
The morning visit is at a family-run estate in the Chianti Classico zone — the historic heartland of Tuscan wine, between Florence and Siena. The appointment is confirmed in advance. You are expected, received properly, and shown through the cellar or the vineyard before sitting down to a guided tasting of the estate's wines. Time at the first estate: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on whether you include lunch.
Between the two wineries, your driver will route through one of the great Chianti villages. Greve in Chianti, with its triangular medieval piazza and the celebrated salumi of the Falorni family, ageing under the arcades since 1806. Or Panzano, the hilltop village above the Conca d'Oro — the golden valley considered the finest growing ground in the entire Chianti Classico. Or Radda, one of the three original villages of the ancient Lega del Chianti, its medieval walls still intact, quiet enough to hear the bells. The choice depends on timing and what interests your group.
The best wine tours are not about ticking boxes. They are about sitting in a cellar that has been in the same family for two hundred years, with a glass of something remarkable, and having nowhere else to be — for a few hours at least.
The afternoon visit is at a second estate — either in the same zone for a direct comparison, or at a different appellation if your group prefers variety. Options include estates in Montespertoli, San Miniato or along the Via Francigena wine route, all of which fall on the natural return route towards Livorno and add no significant driving time.
Return timing is calculated from your ship's departure. Your driver monitors the schedule throughout the day and will begin the return leg with enough buffer that you arrive at the port relaxed, not running. The drive from the Chianti hills back to Livorno takes approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. We have never missed a ship departure.
Times are indicative and adapt to your ship's schedule. Your driver confirms the exact timing in advance.
