The Gran Teatro Giacomo Puccini at Torre del Lago is one of the most distinctive opera venues in the world. The stage is built on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli — the same lake where Puccini lived, composed and hunted for most of his life, and where he is now buried in the mausoleum of his villa, just a few hundred metres from the theatre. Every summer the festival performs his operas — Tosca, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, Turandot — in the open air, with the lake as backdrop and the Versilia hills behind the stage. The combination of the music, the water and the warm Tuscan night is something that is difficult to describe to anyone who has not experienced it.

Torre del Lago is a small lakeside town between Viareggio and Massaciuccoli, just north of Pisa. It is easily reached by car — from Lucca in twenty minutes, from Forte dei Marmi in fifteen, from Florence in under an hour — but getting there by public transport in the evening and back after midnight is complicated. A private transfer removes the complication entirely.

Your driver picks you up from your hotel, villa or apartment at an agreed time — typically allowing a comfortable margin before the performance begins. You are taken directly to the theatre and dropped at the entrance. Your driver waits nearby for the entire duration of the performance. When you come out — whatever time the opera ends, whether that is 23:00 or closer to midnight — your car is there. The drive home through the sleeping Versilia countryside takes the time it takes. You arrive at your accommodation without having organised anything beyond the booking itself.
