Right in front of Portovenere lies the Isola di Palmaria — a car-free island reachable by water taxi in minutes. No tourists, no roads, crystal-clear water, hidden coves, and a handful of restaurants right on the sea where you can have a long, relaxed lunch with your feet almost in the water. It is one of those places that feels like a secret.

But be honest with yourself before you choose: Palmaria takes time. Between the water taxi crossing, walking the island, and a proper lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants, you are realistically looking at 3 hours minimum. That time comes out of the rest of your day. If you go to Palmaria, you will see fewer of the Cinque Terre villages — and that is a perfectly valid choice, just one to make consciously.

Water taxi to the island, explore, lunch on the seafront. Then ferry north — you may see 2 or 3 villages rather than all five. Perfect if you want a relaxed, unhurried day with a genuine hidden-gem experience.

Option: Straight to the ferry
Board the ferryboat from Portovenere and sail past all five villages. Stop in as many as you like, continue by train. Perfect if the Cinque Terre is the main reason you're here and you want to see as much as possible.

Whichever you choose, the ferry from Portovenere sailing north along the coast is an experience in itself. You see Riomaggiore with its colourful tower houses tumbling down to the harbour. Manarola reflected in the still water. Corniglia perched high on its cliff. Vernazza with its natural harbour and medieval watchtower. And finally Monterosso al Mare — the largest village, with its long sandy beach.

You can disembark at any village and explore on foot, then continue by the Cinque Terre Express train that connects all five villages in minutes. At the end of the day, your driver is waiting at Via Fegina in Monterosso and brings you directly back to your ship. Guaranteed return before departure, no exceptions.

If the weather turns and the ferry isn't running, we don't cancel — we adapt. Your driver takes you directly to Riomaggiore where you board the Cinque Terre Express and explore all five villages by train. Same day, same magic, different route.

We switch seamlessly to Option B: your driver takes you directly to Riomaggiore (~40 min from La Spezia), where you board the Cinque Terre Express — stopping at all five villages. The endpoint is the same (Monterosso al Mare) and your driver will be waiting to bring you back. There is no price difference between Option A and Option B.

The full day is typically 7 to 9 hours depending on how much time you spend in each village, ferry schedules, and your ship's departure time. We plan the itinerary specifically around your cruise schedule — just share your ship's arrival and departure times when booking.

Absolutely. The itinerary is completely flexible. If you want to spend more time in Vernazza or skip Corniglia (which has no direct sea access), we adapt. On the ferry, you can disembark at any village and continue by Cinque Terre Express train.

The Isola di Palmaria is a small car-free island just a short water taxi crossing from Portovenere. Almost no tourists, crystal-clear water, hidden coves. We highly recommend it if you have time and the sea is calm. The water taxi cost is paid directly on the island.

Ferry and Cinque Terre Express train tickets are not included — they are purchased directly on board or at the station. You'll also need a Cinque Terre Card for the national park trails (optional if you only visit the villages). Your driver can advise on current prices.
